The government has acknowledged the water situation in Qwaqwa in the Free State is a crisis.

Water Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and her deputy, David Mahlobo, visited the area on Thursday to assess the situation.

Residents of the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality demonstrated during the week after a young girl drowned while fetching water from a nearby river.

Sisulu assured residents the water crisis in the area is being addressed.

She detailed, "R220-million for immediate relief of the drought being experienced here is allocated for this area. 5,000 water tanks will be made available immediately, they will be a walkable distance, especially for the elderly."

The money and water tanks are just some of the interventions that will be put in place to assist the people of this dry province.

Sisulu said, "short-term we need to upgrade the infrastructure. We will make sure we have groundwater resources development here. It'll be a requirement for each house we build to have a water tanker."

The ministerial delegation will be back in the Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality in six-weeks' time to assess the progress made.
