FS Education visits Welkom school following assault video | News Article

The details surrounding an alleged assault on a teacher by a school principal in Welkom will come to light on Monday, as members of the Education Department visit the school.

This comes as a photo of a Lephola Secondary School teacher, covered in blood, has gone viral on social media. The caption of the photo alleges the teacher was assaulted by the Welkom school’s principal in his office. Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has on his official Twitter account said the “incident must be frowned upon”. Makgoe has further stated that department officials will be travelling to the school just after 07:00 am on Monday.

The Department’s spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, told OFM News’ Katleho Morapela the department is highly concerned with the allegations and deems it as a serious matter, which urgently needs to be addressed. He further added that they did not have many details regarding the incident.

Last week the Free State Education Department suspended the principal of a youth rehabilitation school at Dewetsdorp. The department further vowed to investigate all allegations of racism levelled against the Jimmy Roos School head, revealed to be Sakkie Joubert, after a video of the man in question physically attacking a learner in the hostel in August 2019 went viral online. Ndaba told OFM News department officials visited the school last week Tuesday and received complaints from learners and educators implying that Joubert was a racist tyrant. He pleads with members of the public who have additional information on the matter or allegations of racism at the school to approach the department so that further investigations can be carried out. Joubert has since handed himself over to the police.
