Parents and guardians of learners in underperforming Free State schools might soon breathe a sigh of relief. This, as Education MEC Tate Makgoe embarks on a visit to underperforming schools across the province.

Following his visit to Lephola Secondary School in Welkom yesterday, where a principal was suspended followingassault allegations by a teacher, Makgoe is this morning visiting Navalsig High School. The school is amongst those whose matric pass rate has declined in the Motheo District coupled with allegations of ill-discipline.

His department confirms that the school’s matric results have dropped from 89.4% to just over 82%, and he has embarked on a visit in an effort to address issues hindering the school from achieving its targets.

Makgoe has previously vowed to increase the quality of education in the Free State despite the province having reclaimed the 1st position country wide and having set a record-breaking matric pass rate of 88.4%. Addressing hundreds of parents, learners, and teachers gathered at the Central University of Technology (CUT) for the announcement of matric results earlier this month, Makgoe, announced that the department will be working closely with various schools to ensure that their performance rate improves and that some of the social-ills plaguing schools are addressed.
