Protests flare up at CUT─── LEATILE LEIEE 11:33 Tue, 18 Feb 2020
Protests flared up at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein this morning, allegedly over unpaid allowances.
According to a group of students who wished to remain anonymous, this is not the first time they have experienced delays with regard to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) payments.
The students braved cold and rainy conditions to gather in front of the Bloemfontein campus’ main entrance, demanding that the CUT management address them.
They told OFM News they experienced a similar ordeal last year when payments for food and accommodation were only paid in March.
Some said they were fortunate enough to have relatives who could assist with their financial needs while others had to study with empty stomachs.
It remains unclear as to when classes will resume. CUT spokesperson, Dan Maritz, acknowledged OFM News’ inquiry and committed to respond as soon as possible.
