The DA in the Free State Legislature vow to uphold the interests of the public and hold the executive members accountable.

This, as the party launches it's new "post box to the Legislature" campaign, which aims to ensure that the voice of the public is heard and their concerns addressed. Briefing the media on Wednesday, party leader Roy Jankielsohn said the campaign is set to ensure that the needs of members of the public and those at grassroots levels are put at the forefront.

He reiterated that failed multi-million projects such as the Ramkraal and the Gupta-linked Vrede Dairy Project are a clear indication of a government failing to prioritise its people. Jankielsohn said the party has resolved to launch this campaign to ensure that those with complaints are able to voice them without fear of victimisation and that those complaints are taken into consideration by the different Legislature Portfolio Committees.

Reiterating the need for the campaign, MPL James Letuka added that the downgrading of the Mangaung Metro Municipality by Moody's Service Rating is another indication of how taxpayers' money is being looted by those who are supposed to be prioritising the needs of residents.

He said this campaign is not only an effort to make the people's voices heard but to deal with rampant corruption.

The launch of the campaign comes just days after the provincial legislature's Standing Committee on Public Accounts and Finance embarked on an oversight visit to the Old Ramkraal Prison where over R120 million remains unaccounted for. The project that was set to be refurbished into a new Legislature Complex more than a decade ago, to date remains dilapidated with no refurbishment evident.

The committee, together with that of Agriculture, also conducted an oversight visit to Vrede where the DA has expressed disappointment with the decay of the milk processing plant and other infrastructure.

The party says they are hopeful the "Post Box to the Legislature" campaign will bring the legislature closer to the people and afford the public an opportunity to raise their concerns.
