CUT SRC pleas for bail money | News Article

The Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Central University of Technology’s (CUT) Bloemfontein campus has made a passionate plea for R59 000 set for students who have been granted bail.

The Deputy President of the SRC, Tshegofatso Mojanaga, on her Facebook account says they urgently need the said amount to bail out CUT students who were earlier today granted bail of R1000 each. On her post, she further says they are sending "our poor male students to Grootvlei and the females back to Bainsvlei". At least 60 students were arrested on Thursday after they allegedly contravened a court interdict against the protest. Students have been protesting for almost two weeks due to the unpaid allowances which include, food, accommodation and study material by National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

During the week, the SRC deputy president Mojanaga told OFM News that they have been engaging the management of the institution for some time but nothing was coming forth. She accused the management of making promises it could not fulfil. She lashed at the management for allegedly paying out R750 to students for accommodation.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, tells OFM News that the case was postponed to 31 March 2020. The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) Spokesperson in the Free State, Phaladi Shuping, says all students are facing a charge of public violence. He says bail conditions have been set for them and they are as follows:

They must not interfere with student activities.

They must not partake in any illegal gatherings.

They must not disrupt any classes/lectures.

During the week, the CUT management had expressed shock and dismay following the protests by students at the Bloemfontein Campus on Tuesday 18 February.

The university’s spokesperson, Dan Maritz, said that the protests came as surprise to them following a series of engagements with student representatives. He also lashed out at students for the protests and says although they have the constitutional right do to so, they have the responsibility of doing so in a peaceful manner.
