A group of selfless residents in Ficksburg in the Free State who started with a clean-up drive campaign on Friday have made a passionate plea for transportation of waste and refuse.

Speaking on behalf of all volunteers, Selloane Lephoyi says the transport has been an issue since the start of this campaign.

She says although there has been tremendous progress with their cleaning campaign, they are worried that the rubbish might pile up and remain uncollected. Lephoyi says the team will be going across the town to the township with this cleaning campaign.

She says the inspiration for residents to take matters upon themselves and clean up the town was drawn from the people of Harrismith in Qwaqwa who made international headlines by cleaning and fixing infrastructure in that area following rampant protests. She adds that they then decided to also do this on their own to try and restore the self-respect and dignity of the town.

OFM News previously reported that another community leader, Gavin Boy, said residents in Ficksburg were gathering twice a month to pick up the litter around town. He said they’re giving one hour of their time to restore the dignity of their town and make it beautiful. He added that he was motivated by Earth Hour to donate one hour of his time every two weeks to clean the roads and pavements and pick up papers outside of businesses.
