Free State Stars football club chairman, Mike Mokoena

The funeral of 68-year-old Free State Stars football club chairman, Mike Mokoena, will take place at the Methodist Church in Bohlokong in Bethlehem in the Free State.

Mokoena passed away last week on 17 June, after a long battle with cancer. He will be laid to rest today during a Special Provincial Official Funeral - Category 2.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed that the national flag must fly at half-mast at all state buildings in the province today.

The Free State premier’s spokesperson, Setjhaba Maphalla, says because of Covid-19 regulations, only premier Sisi Ntombela will attend the funeral to offer her condolences.

He states that the provincial government has urged members of the community not to attend the funeral, as only 50 people are allowed to attend.

He says residents should utilise the various media platforms to access the proceedings.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman, Irvin Khoza, said Mokoena was one of the founding members of the National Soccer League (NSL), which is now known as the Premier Soccer League (PSL). He was also one of the longest serving PSL executive committee members, he said.

Meanwhile, messages and condolences have streamed in from various sectors, including Free State Department of Sport, Art and Culture MEC, Limakatso Lehasa.

Lehasa said the department is mourning and will always remember Mokoena for his contribution to football and sport in the province.
