The Proteas all-rounder Vernon Philander and Chris Morris have both been ruled out for the first Test against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom next week.

Philander could very well be fit for the second Test in Bloemfontein, while Morris is only expected to start playing again in the middle of October.

The Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, confirmed that Philander won’t be risked during the first Test.

“His progress has been coming along well, but unfortunately he is bowling at only 80% intensity.

“He is only building up to bowl at full intensity to we’re not going to risk him to play in the first Test match.”

Furthermore, the fast bowler, Dale Steyn, is also set to miss the entire series against the Tigers.

Moosajee said they are working to have the Phalaborwa Express fit for the upcoming T20 Global series.

“For the past six weeks the plan was very much for him to start the four-day Sunfoil Series for the Titans.

“Unfortunately last week he developed a strain to the muscle in his right troublesome shoulder.

“As we’ve said before, we’re not going to set an artificial timeline for Dale Steyn.

“The plan right now is to get him ready for competitive cricket when he is ready, and we’re hoping that it will be a slow and graduated return to bowling.

“In reality the target be will probably for the T20 Global League beginning in November.”

The first Test at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom begins on 28 September.

The squad for the Test series will be announced later this week.
