Rain halts proceedings in Centurion─── MORGAN PIEK 16:05 Mon, 15 Jan 2018
Rain has brought a halt to proceedings on day three of the 2nd Test between the Proteas and India at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
When the heavens opened up, South Africa were on 68/2 during the second innings.
The Proteas held a 28-run first innings lead over India after the visitors were dispatched earlier in the day.
India added 124 runs to their overnight score of 183 for five to be bowled out for 307 runs.
Virat Kohli hit 15 fours for a true captain’s knock of 153 before being caught by AB de Villiers off the bowling of Morné Morkel. He was well supported at the back of their innings by Ravi Ashwin, who contributed with a valuable 38 runs.
Morkel was the pick of the Proteas bowlers with four wickets for 60 runs, while each of the remaining four members of the bowling attack bagged one wicket apiece.
The Proteas were in a spot of bother early in their second innings after Aiden Markram and Hashim Amla were trapped lbw for just one run by Jasprit Bumrah, leaving the host reeling at 3/2.
Dean Elgar hit 3 fours and six to take his personal tally to 29, while AB de Villiers scored 35 runs, with 5 fours to help resurrect the South African innings somewhat.
When the rain in the capital city started, the Proteas held a 98 run lead, with eight 2nd innings wickets remaining.
South Africa leads the three-Test series one-nil following a 72-run win at Newlands in Cape Town. A win for South Africa in Centurion will mean a series victory over the world number ones.
