Saint Andrew's School in Bloemfontein were named as the Coca-Cola National Schools T20 champions on Sunday after beating Hilton College of KwaZulu-Natal by 6 wickets at the Tuks Oval in Pretoria.

Hilton batted first and scored 123/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Michael Sclanders top-scored for Hilton with 27 runs in an innings which include 4 fours. Michael Booth added 21 runs to the score, while Gareth Schreuder contributed with a knock of 19 runs.

Henré Koekemoer was the pick of the Saints bowlers with his three wickets for 11 runs in three overs. Gerald Coetzee, Ruan Cronjé and Phillip Schoeman each bagged one wicket in restricting Hilton to the seemingly low total.

The Saint Andrews innings could not have got off to a worse start with the team losing three wickets for just a single run to start off their run chase. Koekemoer was trapped LBW for 1 run before both Coetzee and Calvin Flanegan were both caught out for a duck making the task seemingly possible.

Cronjé, who scored 44* against Graeme Collage on Sunday morning, played an outstanding innings of 65* off 59 balls, with 3 sixes and 2 fours to lead his team to a stunning victory in the final over of the game.

He was well supported by the captain, Garnett Tarr, who played a gem of a captain's knock with 44 brave runs to see his team to the brink of victory. Unfortunately he was trapped LBW in the penultimate over of the match.

Pheko Moletsane scored 6 runs in 3 balls, and although it was not much on paper, his contribution cannot be underestimated.

For the Cronjé family it was a special weekend indeed as Ruans’ sister won the national junior title on Saturday evening, leaving the family with two national titles.

This stunning victory could very well prove to be the start of a bright future for many of the players in this current team.
