SA caddie helps Garcia to Masters win | News Article

Cape Town - South Africa's Glen Murray is about to collect the biggest cheque of his career after helping Sergio Garcia to victory in the 81st Masters at Augusta National on Sunday.

Garcia went toe-to-toe with European Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose after they both posted final rounds of 3-under par, 69, resulting in a playoff.

Garcia came out on top at the first playoff hole where his birdie clinched his maiden Major title.

Murray, who hails from Durban, was stunned by Garcia's win, and was quoted by ESPN as saying, "I thought I'd be more emotional!"

Murray has been caddie for most of Garcia's professional career with the South African reminiscing it was "almost from the beginning".

There was, however, a short year and a half break in 2014, but Murray got back to carrying his bag - and it has certainly paid off.

On Sunday, Garcia became the third Spanish golfer to win the Masters - after Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal - and achieved the greatest triumph of his career to date on what would have been his idol Ballesteros' 60th birthday.

The caddies who've seen their partner don the green jacket get to keep the flags from the 18th hole of a major - Murray now has one from the Masters.

While deals between players and their caddies vary, Murray can realistically expect to receive at least 10% of Garcia's $1.98m pay cheque for his victory, which amounts to a rather sizeable R2.75 mililon.

Murray has previously caddied for South African duo Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen among others.
