VIDEO: #CruiseFromHell - Cruise giant Carnival is promising an investigation─── 11:48 Tue, 20 Feb 2018
Cruise giant Carnival is promising an investigation into its handling of a series of brawls that broke out last week on a ship based in Australia.
Video of the incidents aboard the Carnival Legend posted online include a scene where Carnival security guards violently kick passengers who are down on the ground.
"The actions seen on the video by our security team are not in line with our values and policies," the Miami-based line said Monday in a statement sent to USA TODAY. "We are conducting a full investigation and will take appropriate corrective action as necessary."
The brawls took place during a 10-night South Pacific voyage that ended Saturday in Melbourne, Australia, and involved dozens of people. Australia's Sydney Morning Herald reports that as many as 30 people were injured in what some called the "cruise from hell." Pictures posted online show passengers who are bruised and bleeding.
The Herald and several other local news outlets reported the brawls may have been sparked by a dispute over a thong.
More than 20 passengers were removed from the ship on Friday, a day before it arrived in Melbourne, for what Carnival described as "extremely unruly behaviour." In its statement, the line singled out one large family group that it alleged physically attacked other passengers in a ship-board nightclub.
"We have a zero-tolerance approach to excessive behaviour that affects other guests," Carnival said in the statement. "In line with this policy, we cooperated fully with local authorities in Australia to remove a large family group who had been involved in disruptive acts aboard the vessel."
As of Monday morning, no charges had been filed against any of the passengers, news service Reuters' Australia office reports.
Carnival has offered every passenger on the sailing a 25% credit toward a future cruise as compensation for the incidents.
Carrying 2,124 passengers at double occupancy, Carnival Legend is a Sydney, Australia-based vessel that caters to the local Australian market with low-cost voyages to the South Pacific. The trips aren't sold in the United States.
