Situation desperate in Harrismith after massive runaway veldfire─── SABRINA DEAN 08:06 Fri, 19 Sep 2014
Harrismith - Farmers affected by a massive runaway veldfire in the Harrismith area yesterday are in desperate need of assistance with fodder for livestock, as well as transport of fodder.
Free State Agriculture president Dan Kriek says they are still gathering information, but what they have heard is not good.
He explains what farmers are faced with today.
At least three people were killed in yesterday’s fire, which was fuelled by wind speeds in excess of 100km/h. There are also unconfirmed reports that a mother and her one-month-old baby burned to death.

Meanwhile the chairperson of the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association Thinus Steenkamp says they have been informed that a government delegation is expected to visit the area today to assess damage following calls for it to be declared a disaster area.
