Chaos at Rustenburg council meeting | News Article

Rustenburg - Drama and pandemonium erupted at the Rustenburg Civic Centre on Friday, where the first sitting of council was taking place.

An ANC supporter was assaulted by EFF supporters who were trying to bar the ANC from the hall where the public was meant to observe the proceedings.

Angry ANC supporters then flooded the entrance, demanding that the police remove the EFF.

More than a hundred ANC supporters, dressed in party T-shirts, then tried to force their way in as police pushed them out of the hall.

ANC supporters told police they would not leave the hall until they had drawn blood from the EFF.

Meanwhile, in the council assembly, the incoming councillors were being sworn in.

There are 89 council seats in total.

The ANC has 43 seats and the opposition parties have 46 seats.

The outcome will depend on who the smaller parties - the Botho Community Movement (BCM) and the African Independent Congress (AIC) - vote for.
