Brits - The police in Brits, North West, are on the lookout for five suspects after a 60-year-old farmer was shot on his farm in the Assen district on Tuesday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Nick Dollmann, says the farmer was transported to a hospital in a very serious condition after he was shot in the area of his abdomen. Dollmann says the farmer was provided with advanced life support on the scene. He says the man, whose name is not yet known, was later airlifted to a specialised trauma unit in Johannesburg for further medical care.

Brits police spokesperson, Mpeile Talane, says the suspects invaded the house at about 17:00 and demanded firearms from the farmer and his wife. “When the farmer told the suspects that he does not have any firearms in the house, they allegedly assaulted both the man and his wife. They then took two firearms, (a pistol and shotgun) and also a cell phone. After they took the stolen items, they shot the farmer and fled by foot. We appeal to anyone with information to come forward,” says Talane.

He adds that security and police presence in Brits will be beefed up to ensure the safety of the residents. It is the second farm attack in the area since Friday.
