Bloemfontein - Illegal electricity connections are a huge problem throughout the country. This is according to Minister of Energy, Mmamoloko Kubayi.

She was speaking at the Energy Imbizo, held at the Khayelitsha informal settlement in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Kubayi was conducting progress inspections to check on the functionality of electricity boxes the department has installed in the area.

She issued a stern warning to community members.

“It denies us the opportunity to generate income but more than anything it tampers with the electricity to an extent that other people die in other areas because of these illegal connections. We have a problem with it countrywide but we are dealing with it. And we are appealing to the households by saying don’t allow these people to come to your houses and don’t agree with them when they say they want to tamper with the boxes,” she said.

Kubayi said those found guilty of illegal electricity connections could face up to ten years in prison.

She urged community members to also be patient if they do not have electricity in their areas. She said the department is doing everything to ensure every household has access.
