Kimberley - A Malawian national appeared before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice after attempting to bribe an Immigration Officer from the Department of Home Affairs.

Hawks spokesperson, Philane Nkwalase, says McAnderdon Doctor, a court interpreter working at the Galeshewe Court in Kimberley, was arrested on Wednesday after the police were informed about his scheme.

Nkwalase says the man tried to coerce the Home Affairs official not to produce a final rejection letter against an illegal immigrant that was set to appear in court.

He says the suspect’s identity also came into question when he was apprehended.

“The interpreter is also a foreign national, in terms of the papers that he produced. One that granted his asylum has a different date to the driver’s licence of the country where he is from. Hence on the statement, we did not specify his age because we have these documents that are contradictory to each other,” he said.

Nkwalase told OFM News that more arrests should be expected as the Hawks continue with their investigations.

The suspect will remain in police custody and he will appear again in court on 30 June 2017 for a formal bail application.
