No bird flu in North West─── MARK STEENBOK 10:13 Sat, 15 Jul 2017
Mahikeng - The North West Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development (READ) has assured farmers that there have been no cases of the Avian Influenza viral disease recorded in the province.
Spokesperson for the department, Emelda Setlhako, says the department is on high alert for any cases that might be detected after avian flu was first detected in Mpumalanga during the first week of July this year.
She adds that all poultrymfarmers and the public at large should remain vigilant and report cases of high mortality in chickens at the nearest State Veterinary offices.
“The Department has a contingency plan in place, should the disease spread to the province. Members of the public should also note that there is no evidence that the current Avian Influenza strain of H5N8 virus affects humans,” says Setlhako.
