The CUT and the UFS have given the Mangaung Metro Municipality mayor, Olly Mlamleli, as well as the MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, seven working days to respond to a memorandum of grievances regarding student safety.

Hundreds of staff members and students from the Central University of Technology (CUT) and the University of the Free State (UFS) marched to the Bram Fischer Building to deliver the memorandum this afternoon. The list of grievances was received by municipal officials and the Free State Police Commissioner, Lebeona Tsumane.

Among the complaints is the suggestion of an increased police visibility around university premises, as well as an increase in the deployment of police resources at identified crime hotspots.

UFS SRC President, Sikhululekile Luwaca, has urged the police and local municipality to deal with the issues urgently.

“We demand the establishment of a Rental Housing Tribunal that will resolve disputes between lessees and lessors. We demand the establishment of a multi-stakeholder forum, specifically directed at monitoring and addressing issues around student housing. We demand the fast-tracking of the implementation and establishment of grant-funded student housing, as committed to by the Department of Human Settlements.”
