Concerned residents from the northern parts of Bloemfontein can rest assured that the issue of water quality is being dealt with, and the water is at this point safe to consume.
The Mangaung Metro Municipality has been receiving complaints from residents about the water discolouration and a distinct odour. Residents have noticed a brown colour in the water when using their kitchen sinks, running a bath or washing their laundry.
Acting Executive Mayor, Cllr Lulama Titi Odili, visited the Maselspoort Water Treatment Plant where she interacted with the city’s engineers and officials in their laboratories. They assured her that the water is safe for consumption.
Municipality spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, commented that the reason for the smelly and brown colour of the water is a result of geosmin, an organic compound with a distinct earthy taste and aroma, which occurs because of severe temperatures.
The metro urges the community to remain patient as the discolouration may happen periodically as a result of either maintenance or ageing infrastructure.
Residents of Mangaung will be updated regarding any inconveniences.
