The South African Weather Service warns motorists not to throw cigarette butts out of their car windows or to make open fires that could lead to runaway veld fires.
According to Tumi Phatudi from the Bloemfontein Weather Service, the wind speed is currently 40 kilometres per hour. Motorists are also urged to reduce speed on the roads due to the strong winds.
The Department of Agriculture's Deputy Director of Forest and Veld Fire Oversight in Bloemfontein, Malcolm Procter, reports of a number of fires in the Free State.
“Fires have been reported in the Karee area, south of Bloemfontein, near the university’s experimental farm, as well as in Thaba Nchu,” says Procter.
