#MangoStrike negotiations continue─── NOMAQHAWE MTEBELE 13:12 Thu, 19 Oct 2017
Negotiations are taking place between Mango and Solidarity as the strike continues. Pilots at the airline are demanding a salary increase of 8.5%.
The two parties held a meeting on Wednesday to address demands. This comes after unsuccessful negotiations between Solidarity and Mango had led to a strike involving about 95% of the airline’s pilots on Monday morning. The airline had made contingency plans to accommodate clients in case of cancelled and delayed flights. According to Solidarity’s Deon Reyneke, the union is optimistic that the strike will end shortly…
“The strike is still ongoing. We did receive a revised offer from the company yesterday. It was a very positive meeting from both sides. We also submitted some proposals which the company is looking at. If they agree to that then we can settle this impasse today,” said Reyneke.
Reyneke had said that the strike would continue for as long as it takes as the airline’s offer of a 6% increase is too low. “The reason that we ask for 8.5% is the fact that, according to the company’s PE consultant’s report, the pilots at Mango and the first officers receive respectively between 23% and 40% less than the market standard. That is why we asked the company to give us an increase that is a couple of percentages more so that we can catch up with the market. However, the company refused,” explained Reyneke.
