#FeesMustFall report’s focus on TVETs 'a good sign' | News Article

The Heher Commission report focuses on the previously overlooked Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, a decision welcomed by the Central University of Technology in the Free State.


This is according to CUT Vice Chancellor, Henk de Jager, who is pleased this sector is getting attention.

The commission was established by President Jacob Zuma to establish the feasibility of free higher education in 2016. This comes after Fees Must Fall protests erupted in South African universities. The report was released on Monday. Universities South Africa (USAf) will be releasing a statement in reaction to the report on behalf of all South African tertiary institutions. According to De Jager, the President will engage with the minister of Higher Education to establish a way forward…

De Jager welcomes a focus on the TVET sector. “I am of the view that the sector was severely underfunded, of course, the same for universities but worse than universities,” said De Jager. He also sees the emphasis of the report on postgraduate students as positive.
