Stock theft in the Free State is worrying - NPA | News Article

The increasing stock theft in the Free State is crippling the country’s economy.

This is according to National Prosecution Authority's (NPA) specialist in stock theft prosecutions, Jacques Harrington. Harrington says there is a 70% under-reporting of stock theft by the farming community and that only 30% of reported cases are a true representation of how farmers are affected. He says from the beginning of February to the end of April this year over 8900 animals were stolen. This includes cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys and horses. Harrington says the economy in the province is largely driven by agriculture and the increasing stock theft is a rip-off not only to farmers but to the broader community.
