A North West suspect arrested in connection with a bogus recruitment plan has appeared in the Molopo Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody for further investigation until his January 18 bail application.
Police are still looking for one or more accomplices and more leads. The arrest prompted North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Dr Mpho Motlhabane, to warn the people of North West to be cautious of such scams.
It is said the suspects demand an amount of about R3 000 from young people around Mahikeng as a pretext to recruit them as traffic officers. Director of Communications Services for the department, Thabo Sematle, says more people are coming forward to report being scammed.
“We also want to make it categorically clear to all young people and the public in general, that whenever we place an advertisement, there is no way we would ask for some fees to be paid up front. And therefore, anybody who approaches you and asks this, must set the alarm bells ringing,” Sematle added.
The department further advised the public to constantly verify information relating to recruitment and learnerships with the departmental officials directly or through our social media platforms, call centre, website and/or email address.
