#HoerskoolOvervaal update: Situation remains tense - police─── DANE BEISHEIM 12:22 Thu, 18 Jan 2018
Private security guards and police officials are keeping an eye on the situation at Overvaal High School in Vereeniging this morning, following a demonstration that took place there yesterday.
According to the police spokesperson, Lungelo Dlamini, the situation remains "tense" outside the school, but there have been no further incidents. The first day of school was marked by clashes between EFF protesters and the police, during which shock grenades and rubber bullets were fired. A total of 11 people were arrested yesterday. Ten were detained for public violence and one for the illegal possession of a firearm.
“There is a small group of protestors protesting at the school, but the police are there to monitor the situation,” Dlamini added.
Yesterday’s protests followed in the wake of a High Court ruling against the Gauteng Education Department's instruction to the Vereeniging school to admit 55 English-speaking pupils to the Afrikaans-medium school. EFF members are unhappy with the school’s language and admissions policy.
