The Armed Forces Day held in Kimberley today commemorates the centenary of the sinking of the #SSMendi on 21 February 1917, which became one of South Africa’s worst tragedies of the First World War (1914-1918).
Commander in chief of the South African National Defence Force, President Cyril Ramaphosa, also took part in a wreath-laying ceremony, in memory of the 616 South African soldiers and crew members, including 607 black troops serving in the South African Native Labour Contingent, who lost their lives during the SS Mendi disaster in 1917 when the steamship sank.

Hundreds of residents attended the day at the Centopath World War memorial where the public was treated to an air display, parades by the military and navy, and combat vehicle convoys.
Ramaphosa said the event presented many opportunities for young people. He added that 570 jobs and 4 500 indirect jobs would be created through the rejuvenation of the shipbuilding industry in Simonstown.
"I saw – just as I witness today – black and white South Africans, young and old, men and women, together. I saw discipline, commitment and professionalism. And I saw the warmth of our national character shining through," Ramaphosa said.
