Eskom engages Scopa on municipal debts | News Article

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) says municipal debts to Eskom is a matter of great concern.

This, after Eskom’s Acting CEO, Phakamani Hadebe, yesterday asked the committee to urgently intervene in the matter. He told the committee issues relating to municipal electricity debts are dire and could potentially break the functioning of the power utility. In a statement, the committee states Hadebe further revealed that the power utility is faced with a situation of having to raise about R72 billion from the markets in less than four months. This coupled with billions of rand still being owed by forty-eight municipalities. Eskom spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, told OFM News the biggest problem emanates from the Free State.

Phasiwe said municipalities in the Free State owe them a total of R6.2 billion, which is the highest amount owed by municipalities throughout the country, followed by municipalities in Mpumalanga and North West.
