#OFMHappyDay: Student safety in Bfn to receive priority | News Article

The police in Bloemfontein are committed to ensure the safety of students is being prioritised.

This comes after various stakeholders, which includes members from the South African Police Service (SAPS), traffic officials, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), campus security and the SRC came together at the University of the Free State (UFS) today to discuss the issue.

Some of the topics that were discussed during the round table discussion included a crime analysis presentation, and to create a campus safety plan for students staying on and off campus.

The provincial youth coordinator at the South African Police Service, Mojalefa Chabalala, says they have challenges policing and protecting especially those staying off campus.

"Some of our challenges include the way that students live off-campus and especially substance abuse. We said we want to hear from our students as to what their challenges are in terms of our services. Together we will draft an off campus safety strategy in order to protects our students,” says Chabalala.

He adds that the event is part of a programme building up towards the National Youth Summit that will be held in Gauteng on April 4. Chabalala says that they will also go to schools in Bloemfontein to help raise awareness on the issue of safety.

The SRC President, Asive Dlanjwa, asked that every ounce of resources be utilised to ensure the safety of students at the university. He called on the authorities to protect students from criminal elements so that they can focus on studying.
