Inter-ministerial task team to brief media on NW report amid #NehawuShutdown | News Article

The inter-ministerial task team led by the Minister to the Presidency, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, will today brief the media on the preliminary findings in their report on the state of governance in the North West province.

The team is currently holding stakeholder engagements in Lichtenburg, about 70km outside Mahikeng.

Meanwhile, the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) is today marching from Montshioa Stadium to the North West Provincial Legislature in Mahikeng as a part of its National Day of Action. It is here that the union will hand over its renewed list of demands to the team. Last week, the inter-ministerial team tabled their report into the state of governance in the North West to the Cabinet and President Cyril Ramaphosa. Cabinet thereafter invoked Section 100 (1) of the Constitution, effectively placing the entire province under administration. In their statement on the shutdown, Nehawu said they welcomed the inter-ministerial team’s efforts, but felt some of the issues were being glossed over.

This comes after Nehawu, last week, placed its decision to continue strike action in the province on hold pending the outcome of a progress report by the inter-ministerial team. At the time, Nehawu spokesperson, Khaya Xaba, told OFM News they were optimistic about the progress report. The union met with President Cyril Ramaphosa in Cape Town and an undertaking was made to begin terminating all the contracts of service providers, specifically Marang and Buthelezi Ambulance Services. Xaba said if this gets done, then their members will call off their strike and return to work.

The controversial contracts the North West Health Department has with Marang and Buthelezi Ambulance Services date as far back as 2013/14. According to the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) in the province a moratorium was placed on the health department at this time, effectively stopping appointments of medical personnel. Everything thereafter was outsourced. Marang was allegedly awarded a multi-million contract to fill vacant posts at the department. Emergency Medical Services were also outsourced.
