This North West financially troubled municipality is among those in the red with Eskom and water boards. It is alleged the municipality is on the verge of collapse under Mothibe’s administration and residents have to bear the brunt of a lack of services.

The DA in the province is currently calling on the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Zweli Mkhize, to intervene. In a statement, the party says the municipality is still failing to provide services to communities despite being put under administration. The municipality is listed among some of the poor performing municipalities in the recent Municipal Financial Sustainability Index from Ratings Afrika.

The report evaluates the financial standing of the country’s 100 largest municipalities. It comes days after Parliament showed that defaulting municipalities owe Eskom close to R10 billion. At the top of the list is Maluti-A-Phofung in the Free State.
