Education Charter might be answer to Grey College dilemma

Education Charter might be answer to Grey College dilemma | News Article

The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has today launched an Education Charter whose primary aim is to give parents and communities greater control over schools.

The launch of the Charter comes after the School Governing Body of Grey College last week decided to strip the headmaster, Deon Scheepers, of most of his duties, effectively sidelining him.

The SGB cited its deteriorating relationship with the headmaster as its reason behind the decision. In the wake of the announcement, the South African Teacher’s Union (SAOU) condemned the decision, with its Provincial Secretary, Reniël Lodewyk, warning the decision creates a very dangerous precedent and cannot be left unchallenged.

OFM News previously reported the school said that the Free State Education Department should not interfere as they know what they are doing, this despite the department stating Scheepers is still its employee and therefore remains at the school. The institute said – in a statement - where parents have more choice and control over schools, the results are better.

It especially advocates for parents to have a say in appointments and the curriculum. The Charter is addressed to the Minister of Basic Education, MECs and the Official Opposition’s Shadow Minister of Basic Education.
