A 26 year old man has been sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment by the Northern Cape High Court. Joseph Matebesi was convicted of murder and aiding another person with committing an act of crime.

Northern Cape SAPS's, Sergio Kock , spoke to OFM News and further explained the details of the murder incident which involved both Matebesi and a friend.

Sergio Kock told OFM News the incident occurred on July 16th 2017, in Hartswater, when two sisters were walking home from a tavern and were followed by the accused and a friend, who were both armed with knives. The pair approached the ladies and separated them from each other.

Sergio added that the murder victim was allegedly dragged by the arm, when she refused to go back to the tavern. Her screams for help alerted a group of people who then proceeded to approach them.

Matebesi panicked and stabbed her. She attempted to run away but her injuries were too severe. Matebesi ran away to his friend and assisted him in attempting to rape the victim’s sister.

The investigation into Matebesi’s case continued for about 11 months before he pleaded guilty to the charges.
