Free State police are on the lookout for a possible syndicate operating out of Welkom and Bloemfontein in which victims are defrauded of pension fund pay outs.
According to police spokesperson, Peter Kareli, civil servants are the primary target. He says they convince victims to cash in their pensions, and promise to help them double or triple the amount of money they have.
Kareli explains they lure victims to their base - a house they operate out of – where they instruct individuals to leave the money there.
He says they promise victims when they return the following day, the money will have increased. When victims return the next day, the find the house is empty.
He adds police think it could be a syndicate and they might have people who are runners, looking for unsuspecting victims, then bring them back to their accomplices at the house where the transaction takes place.
Kareli says they have received reports from people who lost substantial amounts of money in this scam. He urges everyone to be on the lookout for these individuals, should they approach you.
