Bloemfontein is ranked third on Airbnb’s list of African cities that gained popularity over the course of 2017/2018 summer holiday period.
The Free State capital is behind the two Egyptian resort towns of Hurghada and El Gouna, which according to Airbnb data released last month saw a 220% and 215% growth in visitors respectively.
Bloemfontein, which is South Africa’s judicial capital came in ahead of Lagos in Nigeria, Pretoria, Accra in Ghana and Grahamstown.
Last month Head of the Department Of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism And Environmental Affairs, Mbulelo Nokwequ expressed optimism at the growth of tourism in the Free State, which he said was an important part of the province’s economy.
Nokwequ said this at the National Food Safety Youth Training Programme graduations held in Bloemfontein.
