Public consultations on the National Climate Change bill are happening in Bloemfontein in the Free State on Friday.

The provincial Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) will alongside the National Department of Environmental Affairs, host the stakeholder engagement workshop on Friday morning.

The Department says the purpose of the bill is to build an effective climate change response and ensure the long-term, just transition to a climate resilient and lower carbon economy and -society.

Last week Tuesday (July 10), the consultations were in Rustenburg in the North West, where Chief Director of Environmental Services at the Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development (Read) in the province, Lebo Diale, described the consultations as being positive.

Diale told OFM News that there is a strong need for local government to again be consulted on the implementation of the bill.
