SANDF hands back NW health services to department

SANDF hands back NW health services to department | News Article

The North West Department of Health says services at many healthcare facilities are back to normal and the department has now reached stability.

This, after the South African National Defence Force’s announcement yesterday that it will be leaving the department with immediate effect after months of offering assistance. Members of the South African Military Health Services were deployed to the province and took over healthcare services after Nehawu members downed tools and violent protests erupted, calling for former premier Supra Mahumapelo’s resignation. Months prior to Mahumapelo’s early retirement announcement in May, health services in this province came to a halt with nurses and doctors prohibited from carrying out their duties by protesters. The department’s spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, told OFM News they are grateful for the SANDF’s intervention and are now ready to spearhead service delivery….

Acts of intimidation and disruptions were particularly recorded at the Klerksdorp Tshepong Hospital Complex, Mahikeng Provincial Hospital and other healthcare facilities in Potchefstroom. Patients at these facilities were left to suffer as medical personnel were forcefully removed from their posts. Those who were on chronic medication were the worst affected as the provincial medical depot was shut down.

Lekgethwane says all facilities are operating normally.
