#FSHealthCrisis: Hiring medical personnel poses a challenge | News Article

Free State Health MEC, Montsheng Tsiu, says the appointment of medical personnel within the public sector remains a huge challenge.

As she nears her 100th day in office after taking the reins following Premier Sisi Ntombela’s cabinet reshuffle in May earlier this year, she told OFM News this has been her greatest challenge. Tsiu admits there are a number of challenges faced by the department, however, refutes allegations that the healthcare system in the province is deteriorating. She says a number of issues faced at the different healthcare facilities in the province are receiving her attention and that 60 more mobile clinics and ambulances have just been purchased to improve service delivery.

Shortage of staff in the province come under the spotlight two months ago when nurses at Pelonomi Hospital’s maternity ward embarked on a protest action over poor working conditions, lack of resources and staff. Nurses at the hospital alleged that patients were dying under their watch due to these persistent issues and they were seeking national intervention.

Despite allegations by opposition parties that not much is being achieved under her administration, Tsiu maintains that the state of health in the province is improving and commits to ensuring that the focus is now on Primary Health Care (PHC).

Speaking ahead of the department’s visit to Frankfort tomorrow (Saturday), she says they are now aiming at ensuring that preventative measures are prioritised and health services are taken to the people at grassroots level.

Tsiu says focusing on Primary Health Care services will not only benefit citizens but also serve as a cost-cutting measure to the department.

“As the political head of the department, together with the HOD and the employees of the department, we are committed to making sure that people receive quality healthcare services in the Free State."
