#VredeDairy farm scandal discussed in FS Legislature | News Article

The controversial Vrede Dairy Project in the Free State continues to be a thorny subject in the Free State Legislature.

This as opposition members call for the respective government departments to cooperate with the Hawks and other investigative bodies on the matter.

DA MPL, Roy Jankielsohn, this afternoon told the House that the role of the former Free State Premier and now ANC Secretary General, Ace Magashule, together with that of the former Free State MEC for Agriculture, Mosebenzi Zwane, in the multimillion-rand scandal must be established.

His statement comes days after the Vrede Dairy case was heard in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court, where Magistrate Collin Nenkosi granted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) three months to complete their investigations or risk seeing the case being struck off the roll.

Jankielsohn is also calling for this motion to be discussed in depth in the next sitting of the House.

The project has made national headlines for several years following reports that more than R250 million earmarked to assist upcoming farmers was syphoned out of the province. According to the evidence presented by the NPA, the bulk of this money benefited the Gupta family and their associates.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has thus far pronounced that they are confident the criminal case will not be struck off the roll and they will complete their investigations within three months.

Meanwhile, the country still awaits the Public Protectors' second report on the matter after her first investigative report did not indicate how politicians are involved in the scandal.

Her office has thus far refuted claims that she protected politicians during her investigation into the Vrede Dairy farm scandal.
