A seriously injured mother remains in a Free State hospital after her 14-year-old son passed away at a local hospital on Saturday morning.
According to police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, six armed men robbed a local supermarket in Harrismith on Friday and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. When they fled, they fired shots at two parked vehicles.
Mophiring says the suspects then robbed another business one street further. He tells OFM News the suspects saw a security van driving past and they fired shots at the driver, who did not sustain any injuries.
A couple of minutes later, they saw another security vehicle, with the mother and her son being passengers, and they fired shots at them. Both the mother and the son were hit. Mophiring says the son was rushed to a private hospital but was later transferred to a public hospital. The 14-year-old succumbed to his injuries the following day. At this stage, the names cannot be released.
