Allegations of missing millions with government housing projects in the Northern Cape are still a mystery after a report by the Public Protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, was made public more than four years after the fact.

Residents in the Northern Cape complained about housing projects that came to a halt after some of the money paid or earmarked for the project disappeared.

But whether the allegations of missing funds were investigated or not is still unknown because the report containing these allegations was only made public yesterday – more than four years later.

OFM News' Cathy Dlodlo reports that Mkhwebane released the advisory report on RDP housing projects countrywide together with several other reports yesterday.

The report indicated that in several cases the provincial Department of Human Settlements paid for a certain number of houses but less were completed. One of these projects included a total of 500 units to be built by the Sol Plaatje Housing Company and funded by the department.

But only 127 units were completed. Mkhwebane states in her report that because of the time lapse since the investigation, she list remedial actions that would address most problems with government housing projects.
