The Free State Department of Police, Roads, and Transport needs to put in place consequence management measures to deal with contractors who cost the department millions to fix roads and refurbish testing centres, yet fails to meet their obligation.

This is according to opposition parties in the Free State Legislature. Their remarks come after it was revealed during the consideration of the department’s 2017/18 financial statements by the Public Accounts Committee that the department has terminated a number of contracts that have gone irregularly and charged the department exorbitant amounts. The Freedom Front Plus’ Tammy Wessels has commended the department for this and for being the one department that generates the most income in the province, but highlighted that the department is in dire need of consequence management measures against officials who collude with these contractors. She added that the majority of the Free State testing stations are in dire despair as only nine of the 64 have been revamped.

“Enough is not being done to ensure that our testing stations and roads are in a good condition. Yes, they are performing but they are still not doing enough. We still see illegal cars on our roads, we still see people driving with illegal drivers’ licences and more needs to be done to improve that,” said Wessels.

The DA has also highlighted that the police in the province also need to be well equipped and police stations must be upgraded.

The concerns raised by the opposition comes just weeks after they demanded that MEC Sam Mashinini speaks on the readiness of the province ahead of the festive season and how he plans to reduce the number of criminal activities taking place in the province.
