NW municipality fails to elect new mayor | News Article

The Matlosona Local Municipality in Klerksdorp in the North West is on Thursday officially without a mayor since the ousting of its embattled mayor who was sent packing after a 44-0 vote of no confidence two weeks ago.

Opposition parties in that area say this means Maetu Kgaile will not be eligible to run for mayor due to the end of 14 days designated to elect a new mayor after such an action.

The Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF) Regional Secretary in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District, Buti Shuping, tells OFM News that a new mayor will be forced to appoint a new mayoral committee.

Earlier political parties, including the DA, EFF and Freedom Front Plus (FF+), failed to elect a mayor after chaos ensued in the House and the DA stormed out.

Meanwhile, the Congress of South African Trade Unions’ (Cosatu) provincial spokesperson, Job Dliso, says this has serious potential to disrupt service delivery and affect workers.

“Our stance as Cosatu is that the ANC must deal with their internal battles to avoid the issue of service delivery. That is our stance across all municipalities. When there are shenanigans and internal battles it’s obvious that those will affect the service delivery,” says Dliso.

Earlier the DA said since the first day of office, Kgaile proved that she is not interested in delivering proper services to the people of Matlosana and has continuously ignored her duties.

In a statement, the party further accused the former mayor of writing off her official state vehicle, wasted money on international investor trips with her entourage without attracting any new and sustainable investments for the city.

The statement adds that the city is suffering under a rapid deterioration of infrastructure, an unhealthy and filthy environment and non-functional financial system that results in the late submission of legislated financial reports like the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and 52 reports.

Last month the Provincial Treasury revealed that the city had incurred at least R3.9 billion in unauthorised, irregular and wasteful expenditure in the 2017/18 financial year.

The DA said there are continuous and unmitigated water losses, there is sewage overflowing the streets, sewage overflowing at complexes and even clinics, exposing patients to great health risks.
