Level of crime concerns opposition | News Article

The Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Sam Mashinini, has come under fire in the Provincial Legislature following an alleged hijacking in Welkom.

This as members of opposition parties raise concerns over the level of crime in the province. They demand that Mashinini must ensure investigations into a murder case where a 54-year-old man was shot three times in the chest and two times in his left arm during an alleged hijacking in Welkom over the past weekend is fast-tracked. The incident is currently making national headlines as a CCTV video circulates on social media and shows him sitting inside his car at the Commando Shopping Centre's parking lot when two men fatally shot him, pulled him out of his vehicle, and drove off.

The man, who has been identified as Shai Mikia Mohapi, was declared dead on the scene and his vehicle was later found abandoned at Shaft 2 at the President Steyn mine in Welkom. DA members have told the House that the lack of safety and security in the province is a cause for concern and the DA demands that Mashinini pulls up his socks ahead of the festive season.

Mashinini has in response said the matter has come to his attention and assures the House investigations will be intensified.

He further told the House that there will be more police visibility and traffic officers deployed on all roads this festive season.

He assured the House that the safety of residents in the Free State and those who come to visit is on his list of top priorities.
