#BreakingNews: Former NW mayor reclaims position | News Article

The newly elected mayor of the Matlosana Municipality, which includes Klerksdorp in the North West, has resigned in a dramatic fashion on Wednesday night - a day after assuming office.

Washington Ntozini was elected as the new mayor of the city on Tuesday in a three-horse race between him, embattled Maetu Kgaile and Michal Groenewald.

One of the ANC councillors streamed a live video of the African National Congress' ANC Deputy Secretary General, Jessie Duarte, explaining the recent events within the party in that area.

Duarte said the ANC accepted the apology of the 15 ANC councillors who voted with the opposition parties to unseat Kgaile in a vote of no confidence brought forward by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Meanwhile, the Provincial Task Team (PTT), Kenetswe Mosenogi, on Wednesday night said Kgaile will resume her duties as the mayor of the city and that Ntozini has apologised for accepting the nomination to run for the position of the mayor.

She says as the ANC they have always maintained that the party would want to retain its executive mayor.

On Tuesday, the DA reacted with anger and disappointment to the election of Ntozini as the mayor on Tuesday afternoon.

The DA’s Member of Parliament (MP), Joe McGluwa, in a statement said that the municipality again witnessed a recurring theme that has collapsed any prospect of good governance in the district.

He said the election of the ANC candidate with 31 votes robbed the residents of Matlosana from quality basic service delivery.

OFM News on Tuesday afternoon reported that Kgaile also contested the elections and received 26 votes while the DA voted for the Freedom Front Plus’ (FF+) candidate, Groenewald, who received 17 votes.
