Minister urges parents’ involvement in education | News Article

The Basic Education Minister has emphasised that the parental role in the fight against trouble at schools is vital for education.

Minister Angie Motshekga said this during the gala dinner in celebration of the Federation of Governing Bodies of South African Schools (Fedsas) at Summerwood Estate, Bloemfontein, last night. Her plea comes amidst several incidents of violence in schools and the shutting down of schools in Koffiefontein. Motshekga said the school cannot operate efficiently without the buy-in of parents.

The OFM News team was also recognised with an award by Fedsas for reporting extensively on education in and around central South Africa.

OFM News reports that school pupils of the volatile community in Koffiefontein is approaching their seventh week since education was halted amidst violent protests.

Minister Angie Motshekga told the gathering that this can be done through the formation of a policy with clear guidelines on how parents can be involved and what role they can play in education and at school. She further said one way to do this is to establish different clubs at which parents can volunteer and involve themselves.

Her comment comes in the wake of an event where a 17-year-old boy from Makapanstad in Moretele in the North West appeared in court yesterday following his arrest for stabbing to death a 7-year-old boy after a fallout with the child’s older sister. He will remain in custody in a Juvenile Facility until his next court appearance on 27 November 2018.
