The North West police commissioner has criticised a killing spree that led to the death of 11 people and the destruction of property in the Sondela Informal Settlement outside Rustenburg

The police said the discovery of the bodies happened on Sunday and Monday. Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane, reacted to the incidents which seem to be mob justice with some victims identified as Lesotho citizens. Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, says it is not clear as to what might have led to the killings.  He says in the first incident, it appears that tyres were used to set the victims alight.  Mokgwabone says the suspects will appear in the Town’s Magistrate’s Court tomorrow to face charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, murder, arson, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Mokgwabone says a police multi-disciplinary team arrested six suspects between Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 November 2018 for various offenses relating to the atrocities. He says further investigations into the incident revealed that the victims were from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.

Motswenyane said the police will leave no stone unturned in exposing those who are responsible for these brutal acts and ensure that they are brought to book to face the full might of the law. She also urged members of the community to remain calm, allow the police to do their work and to report any suspicious activity by contacting Boitekong Police Station at (014) 593 6001/2. Alternatively, the station commander can be contacted at 0824161337.
