The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the Free State says it is concerned with the violent situation in the troubled Koffiefontein as mine workers are being forced to stay at home for the sake of their safety.

Cosatu’s Provincial Secretary, Monyatso oa Mahlatsi, tells OFM News the workers are unable to report for work and that this has become an urgent matter that must be dealt with.

He says the provincial African National Congress-led government must move with haste to attend to the needs of the angry residents who want, amongst others, the mayor of Letsemeng Local Municipality to be removed from her post as the mayor. The ANC Provincial Spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, has previously told OFM News that the party is on a fact-finding mission in a bid to deal with the matter decisively. Mahlatsi says they have raised the issue with the party to try and resolve the matter as it is unsafe for the workers.

“The ANC and the government should be the one to resolve this matter because if people say they don’t want the mayor [then] it’s an issue of the government and ANC to resolve. For us as the federation there is very little we can do,” says oa Mahlatsi.
