Police minister embarks on two-day visit to NW | News Article
Minister of Police, Bheki Cele

Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, will be visiting the North West for two days, starting from this morning to assess police readiness for festive operations in the province.

This is according to his spokesperson, Reneilwe Serero, who told OFM News that today he will be in Mahikeng. Tomorrow he will be in Rustenburg where he will embark on a walk-about in both cities assessing police visibility, particularly in congested areas where crime is expected to be most prevalent during the holiday season.

"The Minister of Police is here just to check on the state of police readiness in terms of our police deployment and just to ensure that the citizens of the North West and the surrounding areas are safe during this festive season. So, he'll be embarking on a mall walk-about, as well as a taxi rank walk-about, just to check on the (police) members and to ensure that everything is going well in the province. This will be a two-day visit owing to the vastness of the province, so this morning he will be in Mahikeng and tomorrow, he will be in the Rustenburg area, where he will be visiting," Serero said.

This visit comes almost a month after the provincial premier, Job Mokgoro, launched the police in the province's launched Safer Festive Operations ahead of the December period. This campaign focuses on intensifying police operations in the province as major sporting, social, cultural, religious and political events are normally planned during the festive season period. These events must be hosted in a safe and secure environment as required by law and the Safer Festive Season operations see to it that the police countrywide focus on visible policing at shopping centres and operations and patrols at all of South Africa’s border posts and tourist destinations.
